thanksgiving weekend

Sunday, November 29, 2009

The day after Thanksgiving we traveled down to Fort Macon and Atlantic Beach, ate lunch at Hooters, got surprised by a bouquet of flower cupcakes for my birthday and saw New Moon (again....just the girls!) After living here 3 years, we still had not actually toured the fort. Like all the other forts we've been to, this one was very cool. It was a little too cold for the beach, but Holly still got her feet wet (and her jeans). On Saturday we went to downtown New Bern for breakfast then to play some stick ball by the water. And last but not least, we got the Christmas decorations out and are officially counting down the days. Another few weeks and we'll be traveling home again. We are so glad so many of you were able to come down!

thanksgiving 2009

at Sunday, November 29, 2009

Our family headed out this morning, so now I can try to get some pictures posted. On Thanksgiving Shawn got together a football game. The turnout was great and they had a great time. This may be the start of a new tradition!
More pictures to come....

This morning we drove to Jacksonville to pick up Nan and Pap and then just kept driving to spend the day in Wilmington. It is such a cool little town with neat shops and good eating. We at Paddy's Hollow, which Shawn and I have eaten at before.

We happened upon a great little music store......and Shawn got an early Christmas present!

NEW MOON

Friday, November 20, 2009

I'm not going to try to hide the fact that I'm overly excited for NEW MOON tonight!!! I almost thought we wouldn't be able to go since we are all sick, but there's really no way for me not to go see it. Or as Janelle told me last night, "it was a test of my loyalty!" So, Shawn and I will be venturing out this evening for a date! I'm not counting the Marine Corps ball as a date, so we really have only had one since he got home from Iraq, which was 6 months ago! I'm praying that Caleb will be his perfect self for Adam and Kimzey and that New Moon delivers!! Welp, gotta go watch Rachel Ray for more movie excitement!! Here's some movie pics to get you psyched too:o)
(I know, I'm a 30-something Twilight freak....maybe this is my early midlife crisis!)

This is what your house looks like when baby and MOM are sick. Thankfully Caleb took a 2 1/2 hour nap.....so mom did too! We have people coming on Saturday, so I'd better either get well really quickly or start tasking Shawn:o)
Never mind that!!! I wonder if they'll hold the release of New Moon for me??!!

CALEB'S 1ST BIRTHDAY!!!!

We had a great time at Caleb's party. Here's the #1 cake pan my mom used for all three of us kids (it's kinda hard to tell it's a 1 :o). We had a dinosaur cupcake cake made for everyone else.

One of our friends' little boy snuck up as we were singing Happy Birthday to Caleb and blew out the candle for him. It was hilarious!

Our friend, Jack, wanted to help Caleb open his presents.

Only one of our videos will upload for some reason. But I think you'll see just how much Caleb liked his icing.....I mean cake!

Caleb's 1st birthday eve

Friday, November 13, 2009

Last year at this time, my mom, mother-in-law and I were finishing dinner and relaxing on the couch. I noticed that I was having some contractions, but wasn't sure if they were real or not and I pretty much just ignored them. We went to bed and I was still having them, so I began to write them down to see if there was any consistancy to them. By 5am they were still coming, faster and stronger. I woke up my mom and asked her if she thought we ought to head to the hospital. I then woke up Shawn's mom and we all got ready. I would hate if I had to be rushed to the hospital without a shower and a little makeup:o) We arrived at the hospital and I got checked in. I was sure they were just Braxton Hicks and they would send me home so I didn't get my hopes up. They put me in a room with another woman in labor. We were laughing because it sounded like she was about to have the baby right there. She was breathing loud and heavy and making all kinds of noise. Another reason I was sure they were going to send me home. I was having contractions but nothing to make me breath heavy or be in any sort of pain. Going home....going home...going home...I began to tell myself. The doctor finally came in and informed the other girl she wasn't progressing and she would be sent home. If this girl, who was obviously in active labor (and in serious agony) was being sent home, I was definitely going to be home by 10am. I was next.........I was 2cm when they checked me in. What would I be now...two hours later? You're 4 cm. You get to stay! I was so excited, but then I realized this was about to happen...for real. My mom and Cindi had gone to get some breakfast, so I called her cell phone and told her we get to stay, start making your phone calls! The first phone call was to get everyone in position to get Shawn on the video. I think I was more worried about him than I was myself and Caleb. I just didn't want him to miss anything. The doctor came in and checked me again and I was 5cm. She decided to break my water. And then I was 7!!! Get Shawn on video now!!! That's all I kept thinking. It was 11:30 at that time and he was finally "with us". At 3:30pm our sweet little boy arrived. Joy and relief were the immediate feelings. Mostly, I think I was just physically tired and emotionally overloaded. There really aren't words to describe what your children are to you...I think. A joy, a blessing, he completes us! We love him more than anything and I find it hard to believe that a year has already passed. The saying "They grow up so fast" is absolutely true.
It feels like we've gone from this...
To this....decorating for his 1st birthday party...overnight!

Happy 1st Birthday, Caleb!!!

You bring so much happiness to our lives and we love you so much!!

Marine Corps Ball

at Tuesday, November 10, 2009

Tuesday, November 10, 2009

There's always a special feeling when you are in a room full of Marines. Pride. Honor. Like you're part of a unique, elite, group. And we are! I always manage a tear or two when they speak of brotherhood, courage, and family at these gatherings. This is a special group we belong too and I wish I realized it on a daily basis when the jets are flying over our house. Or when I drive through the gates on base. But it's just our life and until you see 400 Marines all dressed in their dress blues, you just forget. I'm happy, and honored, to be a part of the Marine Corps.

Happy 234th Birthday, Marines!

(More pictures to come as friends send them to us.)

Saturday Hike

Saturday, November 7, 2009

Today was absolutely beautiful out! There are these little nature trail markers all around the forest roads here. We keep saying we need to try them out, so what better a day than today!

Today's trail didn't turn out to be super great, but it was cool, breezy, sunny and a perfect day to get in the woods. We'll have to try more of these in the days to come.
