Caleb and Amelia started school today at Bechtel Elementary!

Amelia has Mrs. Mendoza this year.

 Caleb has Mrs. Tayag.

We walk about a 1/4 mile to the bus stop, which is an actual city bus stop.  They catch it on one side of the street and get dropped off on the other side of the street in the afternoon
Their school busses are actual city busses that have been painted yellow.  They are really nice!
 Off they go!

More Japan Happenings

Tuesday, August 21, 2018

We've passed this place a handful of times and decided to try it one Friday night.  There are even shrubs planted into the side of the hill across the street that says "Malibu Hills".  I'm not sure they've got it right:o).
The inside was full of movie posters, some in Japanese and some in English.  The decor was straight out of the 70's and 80's.
And...we were the only ones in the place.  We probably should have taken that as a sign, but we decided to stay. While the food was subpar...
 The view was pretty nice.

The next day we went to the mall because it was pouring rain and the baseball games were cancelled.  I learned that not only is it customary to take your shoes off when you walk into someone's home, it is also recommended you take your shoes off at fitting rooms. (Amelia calls these my grandma shoes)

Last weekend, Caleb had a night game under the lights.  It was so nice to not be out in the sun and heat.  I even commented to Shawn that it even felt nice out.  I then looked at my weather app only to find out that it still felt like 90 degrees out.  Lol!
Amelia got to try out her catching skills on Saturday morning.  Look at that form!  She's ready!

On almost every street corner there is a convince store.  The two most popular are Family Mart and Lawson.
(Photos from the internet)

You can get almost anything at these stores.  We walked to the bus stop on Monday night to time it for school and then we stopped in Family Mart for a drink.  I was looking at the magazines and books and found three that I bought.  One was for all of the parks and (toddler) kid friendly cafes.  One was for home decor (I think) and the third one was for cafes across the island.  They're all in Japanese so I have to Google Translate them to find out where they are.
We found a park that was about 15 minutes north and we headed there yesterday before the heat hit.  It was pretty awesome.  Great park, zipline, water misters, walking track, another walking path, open grass field and baseball diamond.  There are so many great parks here!
School starts next Monday, so we are trying to find fun things to do during our last week together.  Monday we headed to Kadena to swim at their pool.  They have a new slide, which has three slides!

We had planned on going to the Dino Park and a cafe for lunch today, but Amelia woke up stuffy and a fever.  So, we'll let her rest so that she can get better. Tomorrow we find out which teacher the kids will have and who will be in their class.  They're hoping for friends from their baseball teams.  Friday we can take our school supplies into their classrooms and meet their teacher.  It's hard to believe school is already here!

10,000 Eisa Dancers

at Thursday, August 16, 2018

Thursday, August 16, 2018

A couple weekends ago, we headed to the capital city of Naha to see the 10,000 Eisa Dancer festival.  We parked outside of the city and took the train into the city.  We picked a restaurant to eat at as soon as we got there.
We ate at Raja Indian food.  It was delicious!
We then walked around before the parade started.

 Habu Sake

Soon the dancers began.  They performed dances all while beating their drums.
It is a form of folk dance originating from the Okinawa Islands.  In origin, it is a Bon dance that is performed by young people to each community during the Bon festival to honor the spirits of their ancestors (wikipedia).

The kids were pretty amazing despite how hot it was.  They even had people on the side spraying them with water while they were dancing.

It was a great festival to experience and I'm glad we were able to see it!

Okinawa Zoo and Baseball

at Thursday, August 16, 2018

The kids and I headed to the Okinawa Children's Zoo one hot morning.  I'll be honest, the heat is almost debilitating.  It's so hot and humid that it makes you want to either stay inside the air conditioning all day long or find a pool.  We're trying to not let that keep us from having fun this summer.
The zoo wasn't bad, but I felt like we were walking through concrete Jurassic Park-like enclosures.  There were only one or 2 animals in each enclosure and they were all just laying around.  So, the only pictures I got were of the kids :o).

The kids also started their baseball season.  The girls don't play softball until 9 years old, so Amelia is playing on a baseball team, which has 2 other girls on it with her.
Her first at bat, first pitch, she got a hit...

 ...and scored a run!

Cave Okinawa

at Thursday, August 16, 2018

Cave Okinawa is only 6 minutes from our house.  It's a small cave that's only 200 meters in length (656 feet).  We met our friends, The Friedrick's, there ready for adventure.  Every once in awhile, we get a glimpse of the jungle that surrounds us here.

The guide/receptionist took us to the entrance, gave us a few facts (by Google Translate) and then left us to walk the cave by ourselves.

The temps inside the cave were cool and refreshing and instead of walking the street back, we walked back through the cave.  It was the perfect little morning adventure!
