Bird Watching

Monday, June 24, 2013

It's not everyday we get to see two Pileated Woodpeckers (the real-life Woody Woodpecker) and a Northern Flicker at our feeders.  They've been there most of the day and we've been glad to sit back and watch them.

Woody, can get to be 19" tall and their wingspan can reach 30".

And if just watching them feed and fly off to our big tree and back wasn't enough, we even got to see them feeding each other.

I hope they decide to stick around for awhile.  We'd better go get some more food to better our odds.

Olympics Camping

Sunday, June 23, 2013

Friday afternoon, we hopped the ferry to escape to the Olympic Mountains.  All of the National Park campgrounds are first come first serve, so we opted for an RV park that took reservations.  Who wants to be wandering around the Olympic looking for a camping spot?!
I'm not really sure what Caleb and Amelia are doing in this photo.

There was a playground with great mountain views in the background.  I decided to take Wrigley for a walk around the perimeter of the grassy area...and this is where it happened...Caleb started running like he was going to get me, so I took off running away from him and stepped right into a hole.  I heard the snap and was for sure I was going to look down and see my bone sticking out.  (You all remember that basketball player!)  Anyway, it hurt so bad, I couldn't cry, only breathe in and out, while whining.
I hobbled back to the campsite and started icing it.  But, the next morning it wasn't moving much.  I had to opt for sitting at a picnic table with Wrigley, while they hiked to a waterfall.
This is the sign posted to the picnic table I was stranded  at.  I figured Wrigley would protect me if a bear came to eat me:o)

After they got back, I decided to try limping it down a short trail to the Lake Crescent Lodge.

We ate some snacks at the lake, threw in some rocks and relaxed.  The lodge was beautiful!

Wrigley nearly broke his line trying to get to the ducks
That's me and Caleb way out there on the pier.
Look at the colors in the water!!  I couldn't make that up if I tried!

Then we took a drive into the Elwha River Valley and thought we would try another short hike - at least until I couldn't walk anymore.  This was the sign at the beginning of the trail.  I pretty much freaked myself out and we only walked a bit before I decided to turn around.  I'm pretty sure I would have been the one eaten, since I was the one in distress!

 Elwha River
 Amelia opted for watermelon.
 Caleb opted for Oreos.
 Climbing the hills.
 Playing Cootie.

Rolling down the hill at the playground.

 Bedtime.
Happy 11th Anniversary!!

Itty Bitty (30 months)

Our itty bitty girl is weighing in at a whopping 23.7 pounds and is 34 inches tall.  After the doctor did his fancy math, he figured she gained about 400 grams since February, which is good.  She's staying right on her own curve and it puts her at about the 4th percentile:o)

Impromptu camping trip.
Dad is super excited about it:o)
Afterwards, we were hungry and thirsty, which prompted a tea party.

Campground Shopping

Sunday, June 9, 2013

After church today, we headed towards Baker Lake to do some campground shopping.  There are about 5 or 6 along the route there and we wanted to get a good look at them so we know what we are getting ourselves into.  At the end of the road, we got out to stretch our legs and play in the water a bit.

While none of them have power or water hookups, we are in the heart of the Cascade National Forest and I'm sure we'd have a great time at any one of them.
